We're starting to fill out our new, most requested category - Studio Ghibli! In celebration, here are 10 facts about Hayao Miyazaki and his studio!

1. Hayao Miyazaki is a famous Japanese Animator and Director. He started his own studio, Studio Ghibli, in 1985.

2. He also is known to fill the roll of producer, screenwriter and manga artist.

3. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), one of Ghibli’s many famous films, was the first Ghibli film to be the highest-grossing film of it’s release year in Japan. (Only Yesterday (1991), Porco Rosso (1992), and Pom Poko (1994) went on to do the same.)

4. Some other Ghibli films that are well known in the states are My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) and Ponyo (2008).

5. Haven’t heard of Spirited Away? On July 20th, 2001, it became the most successful film in all of Japanese history grossing $289 million worldwide. It also was the highest grossing film in Japan ever (with 30.4 billion yen). It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival, and is in the top ten on the BFI list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14. It is often considered Miyazaki’s most famous film.

6. 10 year old Chihiro, the main character of Spirited Away, was based on the daughter of his associate producer/friend Seiji Okuda.

7. His films have won him numerous awards across the globe - he became the first Anime director to receive the Honorary Academy Award at the 87th Academy Awards ceremony. He also was only the 4th Animator to be granted the honor. The other three are THE Walt Disney, Walter Lantz (who’s studio created Woody Woodpecker and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit), and Chuck Jones (of Looney Tunes fame).

8. Miyazaki has been in the animation industry for over 50 years. At the age of 75, he is known for wavering in deciding when (or whether) he will retire.

9. He has two children: Gorō Miyazaki (co-founder of Studio Ghibli) and Keisuke Miyazaki. Both are involved in the film industry as well.

10. Miyazaki’s father was the director of a company that manufactured rudders for WWII fighter planes. Many of his films (like Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Wind Rises) have themes that feature flying - maybe it’s influence?
