By Nina DeLucia 2 years ago No comments

Today is Pokemon day! To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Pokemon, here are 20 Pokemon facts with some awesome tee designs mixed in:

1. Yes, Pokemon is owned by Nintendo... kind of. The Pokemon Company is owned and established by Nintendo, GAME FREAK and Creatures, all three of which own the copyright on Pokemon.

2. Satoshi Tajiri is the mastermind! He created Pokemon based on his love of collecting insects and tadpoles as a child.

3. The series catchphrase is “Gotta Catch ‘Em All!” Have fun - there’s 649 of them.

4. You don’t actually have to catch all of the Pokemon to win the games... just all of the gym badges.

5. With the help of his friends, Tajiri founded both companies GAME FREAK and Creatures to bring the franchise to life. Nintendo joined in later.

6. The Pokemon Company adopted the name Pokemon Ltd. in 2000. It’s headquarters are in Tokyo, Japan.

7. Pokemon is a multi-media franchise. It dapples in Anime (both on TV and in movies), Manga, card games and video games. Which came first? The games, Red and Green, on February 26 of 1996 in Japan.

8. The trading cards followed in October of that year. The manga adaptation Pokemon Pocket Monsters followed in November 2016; then the anime on TV in April of 1997.

9. Before going over seas to North America, the first plan was to change the original designs of the Pokemon. The request was denied, and now many people here know Pikachu as well as Mickey Mouse!

10. Pikachu ALMOST evolved in the anime. He actually began becoming Raichu, but was able to stop himself upon having some second thoughts.

11. Mew played a big part in helping the first game (and consequently, the franchise) take off. A Japanese magazine contest allowed 20 entrants to win the Pokemon - and over 78,000 entrants went nuts applying. The release of Pokemon Blue followed shortly after.

12. The world had to wait 3 years for the Generation II Pokemon. Gold and Silver were released at the end of November in 1999.

13. Pokemon: The First Movie: MewTwo Strikes Back was the first Pokemon movie (obviously). It made over $10 million in the U.S. box office on it’s opening day - a Wednesday! Considering it’s considered a children’s show in the U.S. and that’s a school day... that’s pretty good.

14. It then grossed another $31 million on it’s first weekend.

15. Released in 2000, the movie’s soundtrack boasts artists like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, N*SYNC, Vitamin C and Aaron Carter.

16. Ash Ketchum begins the game at the age of 10 years, 10 months, and 10 days old. That would make him just shy of 31 years old now.

17. Like many of the villains from Pokemon, Jessie and James of Team Rocket were named for the famous real-life American villain. Butch Cassidy and Bonnie and Clyde have been referenced as well.

18. According to backstory, joining Team Rocket was Jessie’s backup plan. She originally aspired to become a nurse but the school she wanted to attend wouldn’t accept her application.

19. The anime is famous for breaking the fourth wall. Characters will often speak to the viewers and acknowledge the fact they are in a show.

20. Pokemon just announced their 7th generation of games to be released this year - Pokemon Sun and Moon!
